Really good game from start to finish. Both sides had really great chances which were not fully converted which made the game so much more interesting.
Coming into this United knew it wouldn’t be easy and it was not. They held back too much and relied on their counter attacks a plenty which did pay off through a well converted Wayne Rooney corner as Danny Welbeck had something to take away from this special night; a tremendous header climbing over Sergio Ramos to bury the ball past Diego Lopez.
It wasn’t it, just 10 minutes later Di Maria, who had been the driving force of Los Blancos, swung in an inviting cross to which Cristiano Ronaldo responded equally well to jump knee high over the United captain and strike the ball past De Gea.
Second half was quite similar with Jones and De Gea continuing their fantastic efforts to keep them alive. Many would say it was the Spaniards best night in the red shirt.
On the other end though, the talisman had three chances that were rather not converted. The first coming quick after a counter where he struck the post. Just moments later the Dutchman made a nice run in the box to respond to Phil Jones header with a sweet first touch onto his chest but sliced the ball which bounced towards goal, eventually cleared away by Xabi Alonso. The last one was a nice volley from diagonal angle which made Lopez dive into a full stretch and barely save.
Something peculiar happened though, the corner after that save was not given to Man. United due to lack of time even though there were clearly a few seconds remaining.
Anyway, I’ll take that, being a Manchester United supporter I believe that was a vital away goal giving us a great chance going into the second game of the tie.
